Jerry Garcia Was Right

I took a trip down memory lane.  At the bottom of a drawer I found an old CD I had labeled “old hp computer stuff”. That was my first pentium 1 computer from back in the mid 90′s… a big upgrade from my good old 386 Dell.

Here’s a little audio clip of Jerry Garcia:

I haven’t exactly figured out how to make it play without opening in a new webpage. So if you want to get back to this page after listening, just hit your ‘back’ arrow.

Merry Christmas Everybody!

Another beautiful Christmas Day.

Merry Christmas from us all!

Spooky Stuff in PA

I was riding along the Pennsylvania Turnpike the other day around sunset. The full moon started rising right in front of us so I pulled out my camera.

Just as I started to snap this picture, a black speck flew out of the trees!

I thought all the witches lived in Salem!

ooooooo… is that a spooky Halloween witch?

Halloween Creepy-ness

Caution: this is icky and gets no picture to go with it!

Since it’s so close to Halloween, I thought I’d share what just happened in my backyard. A good gross-out story seems to go well with the Halloween theme…

While digging up some weeds in my side yard just now, I caught a whiff of that distinctive smell of something dead. Wasn’t sure if it was my yard, or my neighbor’s garbage can (which was really bad a month ago) or what. So I walked around sniffing – almost hyper-ventilated myself… how do dogs do that?

As I went into my backyard (pulling weeds as I went) the smell got stronger. Then I saw the big flies buzzing around. That’s always a sign.

Lucky me… a possum died in my yard again. But this time, it had probably been there for a couple of days. It was behind a clump of little palms along the fence and the only reason I went in for a close look was to be sure it wasn’t a neighbor’s cat.

Ick – all the fur was off and maggots were crawling on it. The smell up close made me think I was on NCIS at one of their crime scenes. I wasn’t even going to consider burying it because I figured it would disintegrate as soon as I tried to move it.

I thought maybe I’d just let it rot there because it probably wouldn’t take too much longer.. maybe another couple of days. Turkey buzzards are always good for cleaning up stuff like that. But that smell…..

So I took my shovel and threw dirt on top of it. Now I just need to remember not to go tromping around behind those palms like I did earlier this year when they froze and needed trimming.

Now, aren’t you glad I shared this?

Happy Halloween!

Bald Is Beautiful?

Not sure if bald is always so beautiful… actually a blue jay without his head feathers is kinda spooky looking.

Kinda looks like a small blue vulture!

Quite a few of the blue jays have lost their head feathers all at the same time. Not sure why but it does make them look so funny. Seems to happen almost every summer. The feathers are all growing back now so I don’t think it makes the birds sick.. just comical. All that squawking they do isn’t nearly as intimidating when they look like this.

Baby Bunnies Are FAST

Early this morning I saw something zoom around the deck then more slowly come towards it. It was too big for the rat and too small for a squirrel. By the time it stopped darting every which-a-way, I saw it was the baby bunny Crystal said she saw over the weekend.

Look how cute this is! Not much bigger than the magnolia cones.

What a cute little guy I think this is – until he starts nibbling on something besides that weed he’s sniffing here. I could hardly believe how fast this baby could run from a dead stop. If you just blinked your eyes, he was gone – like a Flash Rabbit.

Rays and Music

I went to the Tampa Bay Rays game last night with Crystal and Ralph. I thought I was going to the baseball game with a concert afterwards and they thought they where going to have to sit through some baseball to see Adam Lambert.

Crystal wasn’t sure she even liked baseball. I had to assure her that Evan Longoria was NOT related to Eva. We got there late because we HAD to watch the UF-Tenn football game first. Worked out well because not much had happened when we got to our seats by the 6th inning.

The LA Angels took the lead in the 7th and by the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, I told Crystal it wasn’t looking so good for the home team. I had to eat those words because a rally happened and the game went into extra innings (which I had to explain to Crystal!). http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?c_id=mlb&content_id=12213479&query=game_pk%3D266015

I got a picture of the hit in the bottom of the 10th, bases loaded, 2 outs, 3 balls and 2 strikes. What a dramatic finish that happened because of an error. Link to the video: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?c_id=mlb&content_id=12213479&query=game_pk%3D266015

Bases loaded - Aybar hits a grounder to win the game in the 10th.

There were tons of Adam Lambert fans at the game – they kinda stood out a lot from the regular Rays fans. You don’t usually see that much glitter and eyeliner at Tropicana Field!

The concert was good but what fascinated me the most were the group of young girls (10ish) who (just for fun) were doing backflips, handstands, etc for hours even at midnight! They must have been a group of kids from a gymnastics class who came to the game. They weren’t exactly interested in the music just in flipping on the field for no other reason than to have fun. I wish some of that energy would have filtered up to my seat!

There’s talk of going to the game next Saturday now. I think the Bret Michaels after-game concert has a little to do with it but now Crystal thinks all baseball games end with an exciting finish….

Tourists?

I was driving to the store the other day and this truck with NY tags on it was beside me. It caught my attention because that’s a FOOT sticking out of the driver’s window.

I guess the truck was so incredibly loaded with whatever stuff they brought down with them that the only place for a passenger to put his/her foot was out the window. (?)

They were next to me at the light and I just stared at them for a while before deciding I needed a picture. Of course the light changed just as my phone camera came online but somehow, I managed to get a picture of this while driving and still stay on the road.

I can understand about how feet just gotta have air!

So, are they tourists or new residents?

New Family Artist

Morgan is turning into quite an artist. With a little help from her mom, she drew and colored this picture of their family walking in the woods at their new home.

A happy family walking in the woods with their cat.

It’s even got their new cat, Frosty, in the tree. I guess he likes to go on walks, too. Looks like fun to me!

Bunnies Are At It Again

Yesterday I plugged up, yet again, a rabbit hole under the corner of my fence in the backyard. The neighborhood rabbits are asserting their rights to live anywhere they want .. like it was written into their constitution or something.

I stuck a couple of leftover pavers into the new hole yesterday morning (and it’s right next to their previous hole stuffed with pavers). This morning I was pruning my crape myrtle trees and saw that industrious bunny’s handiwork.

The shadow of my finger is pointing at the new hole.

It’s slightly possible that I trapped the rabbit in my yard when I plugged the hole because you can see the dirt on top of the mulch next to the fence. At least they dug their way out and I didn’t have to herd them out like I did earlier this year.

I could plug it up, but they’d probably just turn the corner and dig some more. At least as of now, they haven’t eaten anything they’re not supposed to.
